Leadership Style
This week as we learned more about leadership style I wasn't surprised to find that I was a Participative Style Leader. I have always believe that micromanaging employees removes their ability to trust and feel open to telling you their thoughts and ideas. When I worked for Morinda, I remember once a month the Owner/founder of the company would come down to each floor in the building and would walk around shaking our hands and thanking us for the great work we were doing. I was also very impressed that he not only thanked us but he wanted to meet with us every couple of months and would ask us what was we were doing right and what we were hearing from our customers. How could we improve? It was incredible to me that he would take the time to talk with us and value our ideas and thoughts.
I for one would never want my employees/team to fear me or not trust me. I would want them to know that I trust that they will do their jobs until they prove otherwise. If they aren't doing there job that is where coaching and mentoring come into play and I will help as much as they would like or need. An open door policy helps in ensuring that if something isn't going right that it will be made right and you can address any issues up front because employees trust you as their boss.
One other thing that stood out to me this week was in the video that I watched about Ken Zolot. He said something that I had never thought of before or asked when working on a project, asking yourself "Who Cares?" Why do it if nobody cares? Who is this going to impact and why? Is it worth doing if nobody cares. That to me is profound because why wouldn't you ask yourself that questions. If it isn't relevant and nobody cares then why waste your time.
This week has been a week of more and more learning and growth. I am amazed at how fast this semester is going as I am learning so much and things are now making sense.
